1 dead in British Columbia crash

A major traffic incident in Vancouver on April 9 left one person dead and put five others in the hospital. The car accident is said to have occurred on East Broadway as a transit bus approached St. Catherines Street. Although initial media reports were unclear as to whether one of the vehicles involved was stolen or not, authorities later confirmed that the van was stolen on April 8.

Witnesses say that the crash occurred at about 12:45 p.m. when the bus was slowly travelling eastbound on Broadway as it approached a bus stop, and it was struck head-on by a westbound van. The van driver died at the scene. Since police were unable to verify that the driver was the owner of that van, they suspected that it may have been stolen.

Authorities closed the road between Clark Drive and Fraser Street while crews worked to clear the scene. Police hope that they will be able to learn more about how the crash occurred by reviewing surveillance footage from the bus and neighbouring buildings. The bus passengers who were hospitalized are said to have suffered minor injuries.

When people suffer injuries due to the perceived negligence of someone else, they may wish to hold that person financially responsible for their injuries. The victims may believe that ICBC will cover all of their accident-related expenses, but this is not always the case. Compensation for any outstanding expenses and pain and suffering may be sought from the liable party's estate if he or she died as a result of the collision.
